Voilà! beyond the shows

The usual post-show conversation happens on the way home. At Voilà!, some of it is on the bill. A £5 opening-night taster pairs extracts with the people who made them; elsewhere, there’s a full day of practical theatre-making, a discussion punctuated by play readings and a chance to talk after a performance.

2 November | A five-show taster for a fiver

Pick of Voila! opens the festival with extracts from five productions: Binary lives – Where fate takes us, Windows of Displacement, We Are All Fish, Fiasko! and The View.

Each extract is followed by a short Q&A with its makers. How did that scene come about? Where did that character start? The people who can answer are right there. A brief encounter with a show might be enough to settle what goes into the diary next.

7pm · Approx. 90 minutes · The Cockpit · £5 · Age guidance: 14+
Contains flashing lights and sudden loud noises. The venue lists wheelchair access.

8 November | A day in the rehearsal room

Watching performers move between languages can leave you wondering how the scene was put together in the first place. Making Multilingual Theatre makes room to try it out: six hours of sound, movement, improvisation and collaborative creation, exploring how different languages can become part of a performance.

The workshop is for theatre-makers interested in multilingual work and is taught in English. Those who speak only English are just as welcome.

11am–5pm · Studio 1, upstairs at The Cockpit · £85 · Ages 18+
The £75 early-bird offer ended at noon on 28 October 2026. Availability, participation requirements and access arrangements for the upstairs studio can be confirmed with the organisers.

17 November | The same line, another language

A line can read well on the page and feel quite different when spoken aloud. Staging the (Un)translatable: Global Voices and Panlingual Dramaturgies brings theatre translation into the room, asking what happens when a play takes to the stage in another language.

Presented by The Cockpit and UAL Wimbledon, and chaired by scholar and translator Dr Jozefina Komporaly, the panel explores translation, staging and the experience of making work in languages other than English—or one’s own first language. Readings of short play extracts punctuate the discussion, giving the words a chance to be heard as well as talked about.

7pm · Approx. 90 minutes · The Cockpit · In English · Age guidance: 14+
£3 and £5 ticket options; eligibility and payment details are on the booking page. The venue lists wheelchair access.
