Formed in 1995 in Yinchuan, Ningxia, BuYi is one of the most influential rock bands to emerge from China’s northwest. They were invited to perform at the Forbidden City, becoming the first Chinese rock band to take the stage there—and marking the first-ever live rock performance in the palace’s history, as the ancient walls echoed with free and fiery rock ’n’ roll for the very first time.
The name "BuYi" (布衣) literally means "common folk" or "plain clothes", symbolising ordinary people and a life of simplicity. It is not only the band’s name, but also the spirit they have consistently stood by. Using modern rock as their language, BuYi engages in an honest dialogue with traditional culture—blending the vastness of northwestern folk melodies, the power of rock, and the emotional undertones of blues, allowing tradition and the contemporary to meet naturally in their sound.
Their lyrics focus on real life and genuine emotion—singing of land, time, and the human heart, and turning the stories of ordinary people into music.
On The Big Band (乐队的夏天) Season 3, amid diverse styles and fierce competition, BuYi stayed true to themselves. Their raw, sincere rock expression and highly compelling live performance drew wide attention, introducing a new generation of listeners to this long-standing band from China’s northwest.
To date, BuYi has played over 1,500 live shows, remaining a constant presence on major music festivals and touring circuits across China. They are always on the road, using music to write their own era—and their own land.
